SAFE HANDLING OF DRY ICE

When handled properly, dry ice is safe and easy to use. Please follow these guidelines for the safe handling and disposal of dry ice.

AVOID CONTACT WITH SKIN AND EYES.
Dry ice is extremely cold, -78.5°C and can cause severe frostbite within seconds of direct contact. (Frostbite is a freezing injury resembling a burn).
NEVER HANDLE DRY ICE WITH YOUR BARE HANDS.
Always wear insulated gloves. Safety glasses, long-sleeved shirt, long pants and shoes are also recommended. Use a plastic scoop to handle dry ice pellets.
DO NOT PUT DRY ICE IN YOUR MOUTH OR OTHERWISE INGEST IT.
If dry ice is accidentally ingested, it can cause severe internal injury. Never put dry ice in beverages to cool them.
KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN.
Only adults should handle dry ice.
DO NOT USE DRY ICE IN CONFINED AREAS.
Dry ice releases dense carbon dioxide vapour that can cause rapid suffocation.
TRANSPORT DRY ICE OUTSIDE YOUR VEHICLES COCKPIT.
If forced to transport inside a vehicle then always leave windows open to allow for fresh air circulation. Never leave dry ice in a parked vehicle. Sublimation of dry ice in a closed vehicle can result in the accumulation of dangerous concentrations of asphyxiating carbon dioxide vapour. Dry ice can be safely transported without special ventilation in the closed cargo area of a truck if all occupants are restricted to the cab. When opening a closed cargo area containing dry ice, allow the closed space to ventilate for 5 minutes before entering.
NEVER STORE DRY ICE IN GLASS OR OTHER SEALED (AIRTIGHT) CONTAINERS OR COOLERS.
Storage in a sealed container can result in a rupture or explosion of the container from over-pressurization.

FAQ

What is Dry Ice?
Dry ice is solid CO2. It exists in its solid state at - 78.5°C. At any temperature above this and at atmospheric pressure it will sublimate directly to a gas, skipping the liquid phase. This is why it is referred to as “DRY ICE”
How does dry ice differ from normal water ice?
Normal water ice exists in the solid phase from 0°C and lower. As it melts it reverts back to the liquid phase and you are left with water. Weight for weight dry ice has approximately 5 times the cooling power of wet ice.
Is dry ice safe to use?
Yes, providing you observe some simple safety rules. The CO2 gas that sublimates from the dry ice is non-toxic (it is the same gas used in all carbonated drinks), however, in a confined space it poses an asphyxiation risk. Dry ice is also extremely cold at -78.5°C which means that if it is in contact with human skin for longer than a second or two it can lead to a "frostbite" like burn. Why use dry ice?
Weight for weight dry ice has approximately 5 times the calorific cooling power when compared with conventional wet ice. Dry ice leaves no liquid residue after it has sublimated and has the benefit of producing a CO2 vapour blanket which, in certain applications, can assist with inhibiting microbial growth. It also provides protection from oxidation.
How do I store dry ice?
As dry ice exists in its solid form at -78.5°C it will sublimate at any temperature above this. This means that to effectively store dry ice and to minimize losses it must be stored in a storage container which has good insulating properties. The better the insulation the longer the dry ice will last. It also helps to minimize the free air space in the container and keep the container in as cool an environment as possible and avoid extended periods in hot vehicles.
